When Should You Book a Newborn Photographer?

Between preparing the nursery, choosing a pediatrician, buying all those tiny clothes, and getting ready to meet your baby, booking newborn photos can be surprisingly easy to forget.
Then baby arrives—and suddenly those tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, and curled-up newborn details are already changing.
So, when should you actually book your newborn photographer?
The short answer: before your baby is born.
Here’s why—and what happens if your little one is already here.
The Best Time to Book Newborn Photos
I recommend booking your newborn photographer during your second or early third trimester, ideally around 20–30 weeks of pregnancy.
You don't need to know exactly when your baby will arrive. Babies are pretty famous for ignoring calendars!
Instead, your due date is used to reserve space around the time we expect your baby to make their debut. Once baby arrives, we choose the actual session date.
Booking while you're still pregnant gives you one less thing to worry about during those first sleepy, wonderful, slightly blurry weeks at home.
When Are Newborn Photos Usually Taken?
Newborn portraits are generally photographed during the first few weeks after birth.
But here's something I really want parents to know:
There isn't a magical expiration date for newborn pictures.
Every baby is different.
Some babies are sleepy and curly. Others are wide awake and want to know exactly what I'm doing. Some need extra feeding breaks, snuggles or soothing—and that's completely normal.
At Snapdragon Studio, I approach newborn sessions with flexibility and follow baby's cues rather than expecting your newborn to perform on a schedule.
What If My Baby Comes Early or Late?
No problem.
Your due date gives us a starting point, but your session isn't dependent on baby arriving on that exact day.
Once your little one arrives, we can determine the best session date based on baby's arrival and your recovery.
This is exactly why booking before birth works so well. Your photographer already knows you're coming, and you aren't starting your photographer search while running on three hours of sleep.
What If My Baby Is Already Here?
Don't panic!
While booking during pregnancy is ideal, that doesn't mean you've missed your chance if you're currently holding your newborn while reading this.

If I have availability, we'll find an option that works for your baby's age.
And please don't skip newborn portraits simply because you think your baby is suddenly "too old." These early details are worth documenting.
Why Book Your Newborn Photographer Early?
One of the biggest reasons is simple:
You get your choice of photographer.
Newborn photographers can only accommodate a certain number of babies each month because due dates are unpredictable.
Waiting until after delivery can mean your preferred photographer is already booked.
Booking early also gives you time to look through portfolios, compare styles and choose someone whose work you genuinely love rather than simply choosing whoever has an opening next Tuesday.
You Don't Need to Buy a Bunch of Props
This is one of my favorite things about having a dedicated studio.

Some of my favorite newborn portraits include those bright little eyes staring straight toward the camera.
We'll make time for feeding, changing, soothing and snuggling when needed. Your baby sets the pace.

Should I Book Maternity and Newborn Photos at the Same Time?
If you know you'd like both, yes.
Planning them together creates a beautiful progression from pregnancy to those first weeks with your baby.
It also means you can cross two things off your list at once.
Your maternity session is typically scheduled while you're comfortably showing, while your newborn session is reserved around your estimated due date.
How Do I Choose a Newborn Photographer?
Pretty pictures matter—but they're not the only thing I'd consider.
Look at the photographer's newborn portfolio and editing style, but also pay attention to their experience with babies, studio environment, communication, session process and what's actually included in the price.
Most importantly, choose someone you feel comfortable handing your brand-new baby to.
That's a pretty big deal.
